Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration in Port of Spain
July 23, 2018
The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens that Trinidad and Tobago Police Service security will be limited for the planned “Walk for Peace” led by the Christian Union Church of the Caribbean scheduled to take place today, July 23, 2018. The walk is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. along the streets of St. James into Waterhole, Cocorite. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has informed the Embassy that it will be unable to provide adequate security to participants for the entire duration of the walk because the police detail providing security for the walk will be reduced at 6:30 p.m. due to another commitment.
Note, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can sometimes turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
The Embassy has no additional information regarding this situation but reminds U.S. citizens to review personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
