Tim Cole, vice president of the U.S. Green Schools National Network, delivered the keynote address at the Trinidad and Tobago Coalition of Service Industries (TTCSI) “I AM” Competition in St. Augustine November 5, during which 36 local secondary schools submitted proposals to make their schools more energy efficient and enviromentally sustainable.
During his talk, Cole described how schools in Virginia Beach, where he serves as sustainable schools project manager, are being built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) specifications. He emphasized how environmental sustainability in school construction was not only good for the planet, but cost effective as well.
Before he became an architect specializing in green building, Cole served as a Navy Seal, and was a founding member of Seal Team Six. His visit was funded by an Embassy grant in support of ICS goal of Environment.
The Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College won the competition with a project addressing air-quality, recycling, and open-air learning spaces.
