Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Merikin Community

JP, Dr. Lovell Francis MP and Jewel Ali, Head of Office, IOM

Foreign Service Officer JP Gonzales joined the Merikin community in Indian Walk for a Thanksgiving celebration commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the community’s arrival in Trinidad. The event included a flambeau-lit, drumming-accompanied procession through the community’s heartland and a number of moving speeches from Merikin leaders and Dr. Lovell Francis MP. A military parade was also held on August 13.
The Merikins are descendants of freed African-American slaves who fought for the British during the War of 1812. The event celebrated this history and the community’s continued perseverance in the face of slavery, military service, and the founding of new settlements in Trinidad’s deep South region.
