Ask the U.S. Consul – May 2018

Can I apply for my team as their coach?

Question:
I’m the coach of an amateur football team travelling to compete in a tournament in the US in July. My team has 15 members, all of whom are under the age of 18. May I bring in their documents to apply as a group?

Answer:
Your football players should follow the regular visa application process. After each member of the team completes the application, you can simply schedule all of the interview appointments for the same day.

All non-immigrant visa applicants should complete the DS-160 electronic application form, register for an account online, pay the application fee in person at a local Scotiabank, schedule an appointment, and attend a visa interview. Detailed information on applying for a non-immigrant visa is available online at https://tt.usembassy.gov/visas/nonimmigrant-visas/.

On the scheduled date, each group member will have their own interview and should bring their valid passport,
DS-160 confirmation page, payment receipt, and a passport-sized photo. Additional documents are not required
but may be requested to establish if the applicant is qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of the purpose of your trip, your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and your ability to pay for all costs of the trip.

Remember, it is the applicant’s responsibility to demonstrate he/she is qualified for the visa; membership in a group or team does not guarantee an applicant will receive a visa. Based on the visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you are qualified to receive a visa.

We encourage your team to apply early. If a visa is approved on the day of the interview, passports are returned in
five to ten working days. We recommend you wait until your visa is delivered before making firm travel plans or paying
for airfare.

Please note that people without appointments are not allowed into the waiting area without advance permission.
If you would like to request permission to accompany your team to the US Embassy and do not have an appointment,
please e-mail consularpos@state.gov at least two business days before your team’s appointments.

Cellular phones and other electronic devices are not allowed into the waitingarea, so these items should be secured
elsewhere prior to your arrival. You will not be allowed into the waiting room more than 15 minutes before your appointment, so there is no need to arrive early.

There are several types of non-immigrant visas and the type of visa you apply for depends on the purpose of your
travel to the US. If you are travel ling for a different purpose or want additional information on visa types, complete our
online visa wizard at travel.state.gov.
