Applications invited for 2015 NYSC

Port of Spain January 5, 2015:  The U.S. Embassy and National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST) are pleased to announce they are accepting applications from sixth-form students of science from the POS and Caroni educational districts for a full scholarship to the National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) in West Virginia, United States.

Two students will receive a full scholarship to exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds.  The month-long experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the United States; overnight camping trips into the Monogahela National Forest; and a visit to Washington D.C.  The selected delegates must demonstrate academic achievement in science and also show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership.

The NYSC experience is offered at no cost to its participants, so that selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status.  Contributions to the National Youth Science Foundation allow delegates to participate in this “once in a lifetime” experience.  Educational and recreational programming, as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air fare on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge.  Students will, however, be required to qualify for and cover the costs associated with their visa application.  For more information about how to apply for a U.S. visa, please visit:

The chosen students will arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 and depart Sunday, July 11, 2015.  The NYSC is held near Bartow in the eastern mountains of West Virginia, within the Monongahela National Forest.

In 2012, students were selected on a competitive basis from two of the eight educational districts in Trinidad and Tobago, beginning with Tobago and St. Patrick’s. The districts are rotated annually, and for this year’s competition, candidates are invited from the POS and Caroni educational districts.   Persons who possess Legal Permanent Residence (“Green Card” holder) or US citizenship are not eligible to apply.

Further information about the program and application forms can be found on the U.S. Embassy, NYSC and NIHERST website.
